#1 Public Access Golf Course in NJ
Golf Digest’s "Places to Play"
This links-style course features tree-lined fairways
and fast greens. The terrain is predominantly flat
and easy to walk. However, elevation changes and a
few hills will cause uneven lies. Water comes into
play on 7 holes. The course plays from 6,175 to
6,539-yards and is suitable for all handicaps.
According to locals, this is one of the oldest
courses in the United States. This course was built
near the bay, and Tom Doak recently redesigned
several holes. The club held the Ladies' U.S. Open
in 1948, 1965, and again in 1975. This course was
also the site of the 1997 USGA Women's Mid-Amateur
Championship.
Course has been partly redesigned, and restored to
near it's 1897 original atmosphere, including the
trolley bell which rang indicating the last trolley
back in to Atlantic City in the days prior to
private transportation. Replicated cedar boxes sit
upon the T boxes which used to contain sand to build
a T. Greens fees are $175. Course is now open to the
public.
Signature Hole: 4 #4 is a 133-yard, par 3, featuring
a scenic view of the bay and hotel.
The beauty of this course lies just beyond the
greens where you can escape into a coastal setting
that offers over 170 acres of lushness, surrounded
by tidal marshes. These undulating greens offer an
undaunting sense of purity.
The challenges of each hole define this course on a
championship level. In 1998, the course was
completely renovated by acclaimed course architect,
Tom Doak. The renovations maintained the course's
tradition of fast and firm greens while enhancing
the dramatic skyline views of Atlantic City.
